Q: “Do you consider a recording to not necessarily be something that you do live – it is it’s own entity?”

A: Cedar Walton: “Yeah, you know, if you get a good engineer, not necessarily like this guy, but he at least can be helpful if the music is good. The music has got to be good first, and then they can do things with it to enhance it. You know, some of these things are designed to hit the ear through a speaker as compared to, you know, we of the bebop and of the acoustic era were used to fixing things for the media to hear. You know, in a club or through the mike in a recording studio and just right out into the speaker. But these guys reshape it, pan it and add it again. For instance, the horn sections, they were always asked to play their parts again on another track.”

Interviewer: “To double them up, yeah.”

Cedar Walton: “And then you pan them back and you make to give them a texture that's you just couldn't get unless you did that, which is more palatable to the ear that appreciates fusion.”
