Q: “You know music rather than notes perhaps, because at the middle of your being is music. It happens to come out on trumpet perhaps but what it is, is music.”

A: “Well, it is. It is. We all strive to play something that's pleasing and play something that the people like, and I would like to relate to the people of my era because they enjoy it. They enjoy it, you know, and Ted, you'd be surprised at the youngsters that were coming out to hear jazz.”
