Biography

BRIAN O’KANE (trumpeter) played with the Rob McConnell Tentet when they performed in concert during the &dquo;Sound of Toronto Jazz” Series on March 8, 2004. Regarded by his peers and the jazz media as one of the current jazz scene's most exciting trumpeters, O’Kane, who has since become a regular member of the stellar Rob McConnell Tentet, also plays with Hilario Duran's All Star Latin Big Band, the Bernie Senensky Quintet and Septet, Bruce Cassidy's Hotfoot Orchestra, and John MacLeod's Rex Hotel Jazz Orchestra.

O’Kane has performed with some of Toronto's most important bands and ensembles including the Peter Appleyard Big Band, the Don Thompson Septet, the Barry Elmes Quintet, and the Dave Young Quintet, as well as the Ron Collier, Dave McMurdo, and Paul Read Jazz Orchestras. He has also worked with a lengthy list of national and international artists and entertainers including Maria Schneider, Bill Holman, Vince Mendoza, Aretha Franklin, Vic Vogel, Paul Anka, Diana Krall, Ann Hampton-Calloway, Bill Mays, Dave Brubeck, Regis Philbin, Marie Osmond, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Roberta Flack, Petula Clark, Peabo Bryson, Joan Rivers, and Don Rickles.

Brian O’Kane is highly regarded as a classical musician, too, having worked with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Canada Pops Orchestra, Orchestra London, the Oshawa Symphony, and the Trillium Brass Quintet. He is also in demand as a pit musician, having played in shows including The Producers, The Boyfriend, The Full Monty, West Side Story, Chicago, and Swing Step.

A faculty member at Humber College, he has been featured as guest artist at Montreal's McGill University, the University of Toronto, and the University of Saskatchewan. He has played at major jazz festivals throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe, and has frequently served as an adjudicator/clinician for Kiwanis Music Festivals and Musicfest Canada.
